While I was traveling through Haiti for working reasons, I though myself why not showing how are somethings in this country. Thus, I decided to take my own non-proffessional pictures in my way to different provinces, instead of taking them from the internet and showing another face of them. I hope you enjoy my brief narration of this places and leave a comment about what you think about it.
To begin with, this is Artibonite, a department located in the centre west of Haiti. Most of the ways to its provinces are not exactly highways, even they are sometimes hard, muddy and rough terrains, however you can enjoy beautiful landscapes and kind people from another culture. Now my first relate is about:
Grose Morne
On Friday morning, I took the way from Gonaives, which is the place where I am staying these days, to Grose Morne. In the trip I was able to see a marvelous landscape surrounded of mountains, rivers and good plantations.
This little farm called my attention because in my beautiful country Colombia, it is likely to find a similar place. Its limits are made of a weird kind of cactus, there are some native trees and a good corn crop.
This is the largest river I saw on the way. It is surrounded by great mountains in both sides and a pair of local men are washing their motorcycles.
When I got the town, the way changed to a pavimented route and it can noticed that people drive their motorcycles without wearing any helmet, what is common around the country. On the left side, it is located the Grose Morne Commissariat, with the colors that represent every one of them in this nation on its walls "white and blue".
Now, it is coming my prefered part of every place I meet, it is knowing how do people live?, what do they do?, what do they feel?. For the last question, I do not have the answer, however, I would like you try to guess the answers through the pictures, I can say that in the market you can answer these and other more questions about it.
In this image, there is a normal market of this zone, however, today it is not crowded as they use to be. Many people, specially women, offer their products such us vegetables, fruits, grains and some canned goods. Most of the products are produced by them in their small farm. A particular thing that happens here, it is that Hatian women are really strong, because they are able to carry heavy sacks or objects on their heads.
Finishing the market street I found this remarkable place, a dressmaking and while in Colombia this job is mainly developed by women (I do not mean men cannot do this job), in this town the dressmakers are the man. It is not really common to find a place to repair your clothes or have them made.

What are these places? At the beginning I was a little confused about it, because I do not know any of French and there are some words similar in Spanish for thinking they can be both, schools or chapels. Right now I am really sure that I still do not know the answer for one of them. Do not let yourself be cheated for the add in the wall, watch carefully the photography on the right.
This is the end of my trip to Grose Morne, I will be back with another great place.

Ennery
This place is a small village going norther in Haiti, it is about 40 km. from the place I am located. It was a short and wonderful trip, I was not able to image that I will see such a nice place. This first image on the way.
This is a kind of bus stop or a regular on-the-way break place. People use to sell things, like this guy who sell drinks in a poor portable fridge fixed by himself, as we say in Colombia "el rebusque". He kindly agreed with the picture.
Here is found a gasoline station, a restaurant and some little shops when people can buy some food or drinks. At this point, I thought this is not going to be a great deal, however I was wrong.
Approaching to the central park of this village, I noticed that it is not a normal town like any other one in our country. Besides, there are just a few houses together, the place is clean and the park is really nice and beautiful.
Ennery´s Park is a really good place to spend some time reading or just having some relax. I do not understand why this beautiful place is not full of people and it is enclosed by a wrought iron fence, however there are doors in all of the four sides of this square park. It is not easy to find a place like this in Haiti, so clean and so green.
While I was taking the above pictures, a gorgeous little girl approached me and I did not know her french language, nevertheless I was able to understand she wanted me to take her a picture in front of the park.
This contrast is funny, because I did what she asked me, I took her the picture, but the little girl was not in a good mood in the first one and I tried by mimics she understand me and smile, that is why the second one is a nice photo. When I finished, I showed the photo to the girl and she was happy, she smiled again and continued her way home. On the contrary with this great moment, because I felt such a good sensation with her, a man on the other side of the park was yelling at me, hey contribute! The most of them do not know English, however they learn some words just to ask for money or food, what I think is not good, because they have to work; and those kind of lazy persons are tarnishing the image of many working people in the country and moreover in the provinces.
These pictures were taken around the main park. The first is the commissariat located in front of the park, the others are on the sides of it. It can be seen the market, which is pretty little and the church. People in Haiti stablish the markets in the main roads, because selling things is their way of surviving. In these pictures is remarkable that Ennery is a well-organized and clean place.
Now, it was time to come back to Gonaives. On the way I saw a place where is nice to buy some mangoes, because they are delicious and cheap, around ten great of them cost 50 gourdes, which is a little less than one American Dollar. Finding a fresh, clean and good product is not easy in this country because almost everything is really expensive and not so good.
Also, my grandma used to tell me some stories about their daily life when she was young. One of them was the way how they did the laundry and in this trip I was able to see it in person. In Haiti and I think in some parts of our country yet, women go to the river and spend some time doing the laundry and waiting the clothes get dry.
It is very interesting to see those pictures in locations that we do not normally travel. Keep feeding your blog with more interesting entries.
